Understanding Mulch Coverage

Mulch is measured in cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, and 81 sq ft at 4 inches. The recommended mulch depth is 2-4 inches for most landscaping applications. Too much mulch can suffocate plant roots and trap moisture.

Types of Mulch

Organic mulch (wood chips, bark, straw, leaves) decomposes over time, adding nutrients to soil. Inorganic mulch (gravel, rubber, landscape fabric) lasts longer but does not improve soil. Cedar and cypress mulch naturally resist insects. Hardwood mulch is the most common and affordable. Pine bark is acidic and good for acid-loving plants like azaleas and blueberries.
